NOVADAN has developed a new cleaning and disinfecting agent for liquid feeding systems - to be diluted with cold water.

Reduced use of time, no use of hot water and preferably reduced consumption of water - but optimum cleaning and disinfection of his liquidm feeding system - those were the conditions presented to Novadan by pig breeder Kaare Vind Thomsen.

The reason for his approach to Novadan with this seemingly insoluble problem was the constant clogging of the pipes of his liquid cleaning system. The fodder deposited in the pipes resulted in bacterial growth - hence the need for disinfection on a regular basis.

- The cleaning agent I used previously had to be diluted with hot water. However, it is not easy and it takes time to procure 5000 litres of 40°C hot water. The great advantage of this new product is that it only requires cold water, explains Kaare.

The new product - named Agro Pipoe Cleaner - was developed and is manufactured by the chemical production company NOVADAN in Kolding.

Irreproachably Clean Pipes

In spite of the extreme difficulty of the task, Novadan has succeeded in developing a unique product for cleaning and disinfection with cold water.

- The result is irreproachably clean pipes that are 99 % free of bacteria, explains Kaare.

- In fact, 2 more minutes of cleaning would provide cleaning and disinfection of a standard sufficient to meet the requirements in dairies, adds Lars Johan Jensen, technical consultant of Novadan.

Prior to starting the cleaning and disinfection process, the pipes are rinsed with clean water to empty them. Subsequently, a 2.5% solution of the cleaning product dissolved in water is circulated in the pipes for 20 minutes, whereupon the pipes are drained and rinsed in a 1% solution of disinfectant.

The effect of clean pipes is evident. The average weight of the pigs has increased from 29-30 kg to 33-35 kg and they tend to eat more. Furthermore, the death rate has been reduced.

As a result of this impressive achievement, Kaare now considers cleaning and disinfecting every three months on a regular basis. Kaare has a herd of 450 sows and breeds 11.000 pigs every year.
